EQ Legends Companion

EverQuest Legends Companion

Launch and engagement: the first two weeks

The Companion went public on the evening of August 4, 2026 with a GitHub release, a video and a Reddit post. Fourteen days later it has been installed 8,172 times, is used by 4,000 people on a good day, and runs alongside the game for hours at a time. This page is the record of how that happened, day by day.

Figures are as of August 18, 2026, 03:30 UTC. Every figure comes from the app's own anonymous usage counters, which any install can turn off in Preferences (nothing from a game log ever leaves a player's machine), plus the GitHub releases API and the project's git history. Days are UTC. Our own installs are excluded from every count. Where a number is a point-in-time reading rather than a daily total, it says so.

Installs and daily actives

New installs per day as bars, people active per day as the line, with the three public moments flagged and every release marked as a faint vertical. The launch video and Reddit post went up together on the night of August 4–5; a second video and a thank-you post went up together late on August 9, and the next day was the biggest install day of the launch — 1,220 new installs, more than the first five days combined; a third video and post landed in the first hours of August 15, and that day and the next were the second- and third-biggest install days. Actives have risen every single day since launch and passed 4,000 for the first time on August 17.

New installs and daily active installs, per UTC day

Who came back

Retention by the day people installed. The founding cohorts — the players who came from the launch post itself — came back at very high rates: 93–97% the next day and 82–86% a week later. The larger cohorts that arrived after the update posts settle at roughly 52–60% the next day and 41–48% a week later, which is where the app now lives. Retention counts an install as returned if it was active on that later day; a player who plays every other day reads as absent on the days between.

What people asked for

490 reports through the app's own feedback dialog in fourteen days: 346 feature requests and 144 bug reports, as the reporter classified them. Feature requests outnumber bug reports on every day but two (Aug 4 and Aug 6, when they tied), and the biggest feedback days follow the biggest install days. A large share of the launch's fixes and features trace to a specific report; the release notes inside the app mark those with a small "player report" chip.

The build behind it

The repository has been public since launch. 1,322 commits and 341 merged branches landed on main in the fourteen days — one merged branch an hour, around the clock — and 39 releases were published, roughly three a day. Every release is tagged from main, built and published by CI, and carries release notes that the app shows in its What's-new panel.

Releases

All 39 releases, in order. Installer downloads are shown for shape only: the auto-updater re-fetches the installer on every update it applies, so the column mostly counts the fleet updating itself; the install figures above are the real audience numbers.

Day by day

What is counted. An install is one copy of the app reporting anonymous usage counters; a daily active install is one that ran on that UTC day; a session is one run of the app. Counters can be turned off in Preferences, so every figure is a floor. Our own installs are excluded throughout.

Retention is by install day: of the installs first seen on a given day, how many were active exactly one day and seven days later. Cohorts younger than seven days have no day-7 figure yet.

Feedback counts every report received through the in-app dialog, typed as the reporter chose (feature request or bug report). Nothing is excluded or reclassified here.

Contribution counts come from git history on main, UTC days, and exclude nothing.

Concurrent sessions exist only as a point-in-time reading; the counters hold per-day facts, so daily actives and sessions per day are the daily proxies above.
